video project in my class

I decided to assign the video project in my class a few weeks ago.  I first gave them access the iPad and let them shoot a quick scene in the hallways in the building.  I gave zero parameters except it should be Physics related.  That was an easy one!!

But then I brought up the idea of storyboarding and told them that they just had to put their ideas down in a schematic format.  Gave examples and a rubric.  However, the ability to come up with their own idea seems to be very difficult.  I am trying desperately not to show my example video, because I don't want just a dozen videos like mine. I fear I will need to do so as they seem to be having great difficulty when my answer to "What can I do?" is "Whatever you want!"

  1. I love this idea! Although I think that some students would love the creativity and freedom associated with "do whatever you want," some kids may be terrified. Maybe, for slight guidance, you could use this as a review of learned concepts. Each group could pull a physics concept out of a hat and have to demonstrate the concept in video format. That way they have a place to start and can get creative from there.

  2. There is nothing like a visual...smile. Even if the class did their DST like yours... I am willing to believe if you gave them a second try to put one together they would produce all originals. Once they learn the foundations of a DST and what can be done and how much freedom there is in creating a DST, the rest will be a cake walk.

  3. It was a great idea to use digital story to facilitate learning in your classroom, and introduce the concept of storyboard as well. But I can understand you students' difficulties. It is always easier when a teacher tells us exactly what to do... However, by doing so, you are fostering creativity and independence, so it is a very nice idea.
